Luca Alessandrini is an innovation design engineer and entrepreneur.
Luca was born in Urbino, Italy, on the 24th September 1986. He graduated from the Sociology faculty of Urbino University with a Bachelor in Communication Science (July 2010).
He attended the course of Industrial Design at Accademia Italiana in Florence on 2010.
In July 2016, he graduated with distinction in the double MA/MsC in Innovation Design Engineering, Royal College of Art and Imperial College in London.
From January 2011 to September 2014, he worked full-time in Stilema company as furniture designer co-designing up to two furniture collections per year. In October 2012, he funded with his business partner Solux srl, a solar energy company, which supported part of his life and studies in London.
Since January 2012, Luca has extended his role in Stilema company to Export Manager being in charge of the Chinese and Middle-East market. He traveled for more than three years visiting regularly more than 18 cities in the whole China managing agents, clients and collecting constant design/style market knowledge and research.
During those years, Luca has never lost the passion for arts and kept working on different creative projects. He exposed his paintings in Berlin, London, Shenzhen, Milan, Bergamo and in Venice during the 2015's Art Biennale week. During the last 4 years, Luca brought his live-sampling piano musical project around Italy and Europe playing in several venues including Berlin, London, Milan and Bergamo.
In June 2016, Luca patented an innovative technological approach that allows to exploit the acoustic properties of composite materials. Thanks to this technology, it was possible to create some provocative prototypes that conquered the world media attention: two violins and and a speaker made out of silk, spider silk and carbon fibre. Those prototypes received the appreciations of some world best musicians and institutions and appeared on several media around the world, including BBC, The Times and Al Jazeera. During this project, Luca collaborated with Oxford University, James Dyson School of Engineering, Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music and ANLAI (Associazione Nazionale Liutai Artistici Italiani). The prototypes realised have been showcased in several exhibitions around the world, including the House of Commons at Westminster Parliament, Royal Society Summer Exhibitions 2016 and 2017, New Scientist Live, Victoria & Albert Museum, London Design Week 2016, Supermaterials; Global Grad Show for the Dubai Design Week; Tokyo RCA II Treasure Hunting Exhibition; Musikmesse in Frakfurt, Mondomusica in Cremona and further more.
From February to November 2016 he worked for the Science Gallery London with Francesca Perona and Michelle Korda on the project called “Mouth-CTRL”. Thanks to two co-creative workshops with people with disabilities from a community in south London and teenagers coming from socially deprived areas, the group realised two interactive installations about breaking the boundaries and redesigning the daily use of the mouth in the future. The first installation was about controlling a video game through the mouth and the second were lollipops through was possible to hear music thanks to the bone sound conductivity. Jeweller Nuala Clooney collaborated at the project realising concept jewels of future mouth music readers accessories. The composer, musician and neuro-scientist Shama Raman that composed the music for the installation allowing to collect datas about the relation between taste and music.
The project has been showcased by the national UK television channel ITV.
In November 2016, Luca won the International Student Innovation Award 2016 from London&Partners and the London's Mayor Sadiq Khan. The award included a 10k research grant.
In May 2017, Luca has been awarded for the his innovation with the international violin price Andrea Postacchini.
Luca is currently working at his startup on materials and acoustics realising new musical instruments prototypes, speakers, environmental acoustics components. He is also working as consultant with brands such as Bvlgari, Mogees, GG-loop and more.
